What a feeling: Woodbury girl a finalist in PBS talent competition
Woodbury native Caleigh Proulx is a finalist in PBS' "Celebration of Music" talent competition.
Caleigh, 11, will perform a lyrical contemporary dance solo to the song "What a Feeling." She began dancing at age two at Woodbury Dance Center and joined the competition team at age five. She said she's been working on this particular solo for two years and has performed it at competitions before.
The talent competition seemed like a "great opportunity" to Caleigh because she said it seemed like something fun to try.
"(Dancing) brings me a lot of passion and I love to be myself," she said. "When I grow up I want to be a professional dancer."
Caleigh said she enjoys the lyrical and contemporary dance styles the most because, "it's a slow, fluid, passionate dance."
"Celebration of Music" is a nationwide talent competition hosted by 17-year-old singer and pianist Ethan Bortnick. Performers aged 4 to 25 were invited to audition online. A creative team chose finalists for regional finals in Minneapolis, Duluth and other cities across the country.
The winner from Caleigh's region will be announced at Bortnick's Sept. 28 concert at Knowlton Auditorium in Austin, Minn. The Austin concert will be televised on local PBS affiliate KSMQ.
Whoever wins will then get to come onstage and perform alongside Bortnick.
Winners will also travel to Los Angeles next summer for the taping of season one of the show. The six episodes will be available nationally to all PBS stations.
In Los Angeles, the winners will also get the opportunity to be introduced and networked with a variety of music industry agents, managers and recording companies. They will receive an exclusive invitation to record a professional single with Bortnick, which will be available on iTunes, Spotify and other music sharing services.
When asked what a possible performance on the show would mean to her, Caleigh said she was most excited about possibly meeting Bortnick, whom she said she looks up to.
Though they won't be on display during Celebration of Music, Caleigh's talents extend outside of dancing. She recently modeled for Kellé Dancewear's 2019 catalog, and she also competes in pageants. She was named the 2014 Miss Minnesota Princess by the National American Miss pageant, as well as the 2015 USA National Miss Minnesota Princess. Diagnosed with epilepsy in kindergarten, Caleigh chose to work with the Epilepsy Foundation of Minnesota to fulfill pageant charity requirements.
Throughout all of her activities, Caleigh is most passionate about one in particular.
"To be honest, I kind of like dancing the most 'cause I can be myself," she said.
She also makes time for art and spending time with her family's three rescue cats and dog, Fergie, which she said is named after the singer.
